香港最大黑社会帮会“和联胜”举行两年一度的办事人选举，阿乐（任达华饰）与大D（梁家辉饰）作为两大地区领导，暗地里展开争夺宝座的努力，一众有投票权的元老亦为自身利益而明争暗斗，选举因此相当不顺利。 结果，阿乐再次获选成为办事人，满心不服的大D决定挑战帮规，他要抢夺到象征最高权力的信物龙头棍，组织新帮会。五名小头目（古天乐、张兆辉、张家辉、林雪、林家栋饰）牵连其中，为争夺龙头棍展开连番内斗。最终鹿死谁手，一切不得而知。
日本黑社会组织龙腾会，通过自身黑恶势力想霸占金三角地区地下赌场资源，以取得组织的主要资金来源。华人记者苏林在深入金三角调查游客绑架新闻时被龙腾会绑架，想通过苏林让吴子健就范，加入日本龙腾会。吴子健为了打破僵局，暗中联合泰国赌王柯曼提，针对龙腾会设计了一系列的圈套，最后在赌王争霸赛期间，在当地政府的支持下，摧毁了日本龙腾会在金三角的黑暗组织。
Successful businessman Thomas (about 55), who has chosen to live in Rome, has dedicated his whole life to his work. When his kind and understanding wife Elisa dies, however, his life takes a turn for the worse. At the beginning of the movie a pharmacist receives an anonymous letter that threatens him of death. And the murder actually happens. Seems very simple but nothing is what it seems and the journey to the truth will be long and difficult. The book is excellent and the movie is at par with it and very faithful to the romance. Great direction. Incredible cast with Gabriele Ferzetti in his best interpretation together with the one in "C'era una volta il West" and Gianmaria Volonté simply beyond reach as always. Many other great actors. Yes I am an enthusiast 'cause there's not a word or a shot out of place in this movie and the plot is ingenious. Who is going to see this film for the first time will be taken away by the developments (the pace seems to be calm but looking in between the kinks you may realize that many things are going rapidly on). Trying to figure out what is the kernel of the happenings and the "reasons" for the murder is a very interesting exercise but it's highly unlikely for the spectator not to experience a big surprise at the end. In my opinion Elio Petri at his best (I mean at the same level of his other masterwork: La classe operaia va in Paradiso).
