吴汉中（吴耀汉饰）早年丧妻，独立抚养4个孩子：小东（林青霞饰）、小南（张曼玉饰）、小西（邱淑贞饰）还有小北（林志颖饰）。汉中的好友突然因病死亡，他感到生命的无偿，因此他想在有生之年可以看到孩子们成家立室，于是假扮绝症让女儿们带着男朋友回家。还是独身的女儿们只好找人假扮男友。小东找到一名男妓谢晒（梁家辉饰），小南找到了一个黑社会的小混混（张学友饰），小西找到的则是一个清纯男（郑伊健饰）。这时汉中以前的女友（吴君如饰）得知汉中的身家斐然又罹患癌症便想成为他的妻子，众儿女都看到她的面目，只是顾及父亲的时日不多。而她们也对各自的假男友，产生了真感情。
